7 Steps on How to Save a Relationship

Imagine with me for a moment the following scenario: Jim is a workaholic, often staying overtime at the office and returning home late into the night, leaving Katherine his wife or lover feeling alone and thinking he is never there for her. Conversely, when Jim finally does return home, Katherine seems to give all her time and attention to meeting the children's needs, leaving Jim to feel that she doesn't have time for his needs. Can this love relationship be saved? Should it be saved? This article presents seven steps on how to save a love relationship such as save your marriage or boyfriend, girlfriend affiliation.

First, you must decide whether the love relationship is worth saving. While almost every relationship can be saved with hard work, both parties must decide that they want to make it work. Unfortunately, if a partner has opted out and doesn't want to opt back in, there is little that can be done. Like many other people, you might want to save boyfriend, girlfriend relationship because it is convenient or save your marriage because of the children. But that is not enough. Learning how to save a love relationship starts with a commitment by both parties that the relationship is worth saving.

Next, you must pinpoint the problem or problems in the love relationship including the core issues. For instance, many people think an affair is a problem that causes break ups and that it is impossible to save your marriage or boyfriend, girlfriend relationship after an affair.

In truth, the affair is in many cases a symptom of a deeper problem.

For instance, one symptom of your distancing marriage relationship could be a lack of true intimacy and unfortunately the lack of true intimacy can lead to a straying spouse. While certainly not an excuse for bad behavior, the underlying cause of the affair could have been the lack of intimacy in the primary relationship. And, once you find out about an affair, you might be able to use guilt to keep another one from starting, but if you do not deal with the lack of intimacy, another problem (for instance pornography) could pop up because you haven't dealt with the core issue.

So, learning how to identify and deal with core issues rather than symptoms is a crucial step and skill in how to save a relationship; by it you might be able to save your marriage or your boyfriend, girlfriend relationship.

Once you have identified the core problems, the third step on how to save a relationship is to begin to share your thoughts and share your feelings. This means both verbalizing your own thoughts and feelings and listening to your partner's concerns.

While you sit together pouring out your heart and soul to each other, the fourth step is to hold your partner's hand as a signal that you want to reconnect even when your emotions are swirling. When your partner talks about things that hurt you, don't over react; remember that he or she is not doing it because he or she wants to hurt you. Rather, it is because they want to improve the relationship; they want to save your marriage or your boyfriend, girlfriend relationship.

Once you have detailed the problems in your relationship, the fifth step on how to save a relationship is to create an action plan to solve the problems you identified together. Write down what needs to happen in order to resolve each problem or core issue in order to save your marriage or boyfriend, girlfriend relationship.

Then, the sixth step on how to save a relationship is carry out your action plan. For intense if one core issue is true intimacy and you don't spend time together like you used to, plan a date night every week. Take turns coming up with creative ways to spend an evening together each Wednesday. If the problem is not communicating, then commit to spending 20 minutes before going to bed just to talk to one another about whatever. To recap, if you want to save your marriage or boyfriend, girlfriend relationship, create an action plan, then take concrete steps to do it.

Finally, the seventh step on how to save a relationship is you should realize that saving a relationship is an ongoing process. You are going to take two steps forward only to take one step back. There is going to be both laughter and tears going forward. Be quick to apologize and slow to blame.

Will going to counseling help me today?
I've been going every week to counseling. I'm doing it because of sexual abuse as a child. Recently, everything started to look up for me. I got happier, more confident and I even made plans to go back to college. Before, I had extremely low self esteem, I always thought I was a waste of space, not worth anyones time or effort. Getting better is so hard and trying to save my relationship isn't helping. It's made me not want to travel the hour and go to therapy today. My sister and he have said it would help. But I don't understand what's going on exactly and I don't want to babble a load of crap that doesn't make any sense to my counsellor. I feel like being with what little friends I have today and staying home... I don't want to go backwards,, I want this confidence to grow so I can walk away if I want to without it hurting so much. Is it ok to not go? Should I just to vent? I don't know what I'm supposed to talk about nor do i know how...
